The joy of things. And of going.

When he was about to die, they asked him if he wanted to take back the stories he had told and admit they were lies.
He said he hadn’t even told half of what he had seen.

Imagine a boy, like any other.
Eight hundred years ago — but it could be yesterday.
Hanging out in the alleys of Venice, looking at girls, dreaming of a horse and a boat.
Just a kid. Like all of us.
He watched his father and uncle and dreamed of leaving with them.
And, apparently, they let him.

We’re talking about Marco Polo,
In 1271, he left Venice with his father and uncle, heading East.
Like many Venetian merchants, he was looking for wealth more than adventure.

He returned 24 years later.
A different person.

In between: lands that didn’t even exist on European maps, encounters, dangers, and the court of Kublai Khan, ruler of the largest empire in the world.

It’s a story that has everything we love:
the unknown, discovery, youth, encounters.
And then the return.
Like Odysseus, so transformed he was no longer recognizable.

Captured by the Genoese, he told his story.
That story became The Travels of Marco Polo.
And we are still talking about it.

So… what kind of life did Marco Polo live?

A few days ago, we went to his Venice to meet another traveler: Matteo Stella, who had just completed his journey from Beijing by bicycle, following Marco Polo’s route.

Like a modern version of Il Milione, he told us about distant lands, fatigue and smiles,
Taliban and welcoming people.
