“We returned to the valley by our own means and to the innkeeper, who chucklingly asked us how we had fared, and meanwhile sneered at our bewildered faces, we shamelessly replied that we had had a great outing, paid the bill, and left with dignity.
This was it, the meat of the bear: And now, that many years have passed, I regret that I ate little of it, for, of all that life has given me good, nothing has had, even remotely, the taste of that meat, which is the taste of being strong and free, free even to make mistakes, and masters of one’s own destiny.”
Primo Levi recounts this in The Periodic System, and they are words we cannot help but carry with us always.
After all, if we want to find a reason why, on a bike, on foot, on skis, in a canoe or with tied to a rope we get into trouble, it is this: “to be strong and free, free even to make mistakes.“
We are four months away from BAM! and we are working to make it, as always, a special occasion.
But in order for BAM! to be again that magic that brings us together again, it is you who have to put that will into it, in which case that of going the wrong way.
So, start thinking about your “ROAD TO BAM!” and put in it a reason to stretch, to make mistakes, to get excited, maybe even swear.
Let it be an unnecessary climb except to say goodbye to a friend, a road taken to go swimming in a lake, a day spent going to sleep under a beautiful tree, or what makes you feel “free and strong.”
Exactly this will make your BAM special!
You get the picture: start planning for your wonderful mistakes, as you don’t usually do in life.
